Pune Traffic: Heavy Vehicles Banned on 12 Central Roads for Ganeshotsav – Full List
PUNE: Pune traffic police have imposed a round-the-clock ban on heavy and oversized vehicles on several key roads in central Pune during Ganeshotsav. The restrictions came into force on September 12 and will remain in place until September 26, until Ganesh immersion.
The Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakare under Sections 115, 116, and 117 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav: Full List of Restricted Roads
As part of the Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav restrictions, the following roads will have no heavy:
• Shastri Road – Senadatta Chowki Chowk to Alka Chowk
• Tilak Road – Jedhe Chowk to Alka Chowk
• Kumthekar Road – Shanipar to Alka Chowk
• Laxmi Road – Sant Kabir Chowk to Alka Chowk
• Kelkar Road – Futka Buruj to Alka Chowk
• Bajirao Road – Puram Chowk to Gadgil Statue
• Shivaji Road – Gadgil Statue to Jedhe Chowk
• Karve Road – Nal Stop Chowk to Khandojibaba Chowk
• Fergusson College Road – Khandojibaba Chowk to Veer Chaphekar Chowk
• Jungli Maharaj Road – S G Barve Chowk to Khandojibaba Chowk
• Sinhagad Road – Rajaram Bridge to Savarkar Chowk
• Ganesh Road/Mudaliar Road – Power House Daruwala through Jijamata Chowk to Futka Buruj Chowk
Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav: Exemptions
Emergency vehicles, including fire brigade trucks and police vehicles, have been exempted from the restrictions. Vehicles carrying Ganesh festival tableaux are also allowed.
Additional Diversions for September 15
Separately, the traffic police have announced road closures for the Atharvashirsha recitation at Dagdusheth Ganpati Temple on September 15. Two stretches will be completely shut: the road from Jijamata Chowk to Rameshwar Mandir Chowk on Shivaji Road, and the road from Appa Balwant Chowk to Budhwar Chowk.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and follow the designated alternate routes. The traffic branch has urged commuters to cooperate with the restrictions for smooth movement during the festival.

With Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav celebrations in full swing, the traffic police have urged commuters to plan their journeys carefully. Here are key tips for navigating the city during the festival:
- Avoid central Pune during peak hours (5 PM to 10 PM) when mandal processions are most active
- Use the Pune Metro for east-west travel to bypass road congestion
- Check live traffic on Google Maps before leaving
- Park your vehicle at designated lots near festival areas
- Follow traffic police instructions at all diversion points
Why These Restrictions?
Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav is the city’s biggest festival, with thousands of mandals taking out processions across Pune. Heavy vehicle movement in these areas can cause severe congestion and pose a safety risk to devotees. The 14-day ban is a standard measure taken every year to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
What Happens After September 26?
The Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav restrictions will be lifted after Ganesh immersion. However, the traffic police may announce additional diversions for specific areas based on crowd density and procession routes.

Pune Traffic Ganeshotsav: Alternate Routes for Commuters
Commuters travelling to central Pune during the festival can use these alternate routes to avoid the restricted zones:
- From Kothrud to Shivajinagar: Use Karve Road via Nal Stop, then take the Law College Road diversion
- From Hadapsar to Deccan: Use Solapur Road, then take the Pune-Satara Road route via Swargate
- From Pimpri-Chinchwad to Camp: Use the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway and enter via Khadki
- From Katraj to Kothrud: Use the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass
