PUNE: Pune is witnessing heightened enforcement measures this week as Ganeshotsav celebrations continue, with authorities focusing on public safety, traffic discipline, and noise pollution amid the festive rush.
Pune Ganeshotsav Safety: NGT Orders Strict Noise Enforcement
The National Green Tribunal’s Western Zone Bench has directed the Maharashtra government and Director General of Police to strictly enforce the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, in all notified silence zones across the state, including Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The order, passed on September 10 and made public around September 15-16, requires authorities to maintain records of action taken and produce them when sought. Silence zones—typically areas within 100 metres of hospitals, educational institutions, and courts—prohibit loudspeakers, music systems, drums, firecrackers that emit sound, and similar activities.
Pune has over 120 such zones, and the directive comes as residents and activists have long raised concerns about festival-related noise affecting health and daily life.
Drunk Rider Enters Union Minister’s Convoy in Shivajinagar
In a separate incident highlighting traffic and security vigilance, Shivajinagar police booked a 32-year-old motorcyclist from Nana Peth for allegedly riding under the influence of alcohol and recklessly cutting into Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol’s convoy near Sancheti Chowk on the evening of September 13.
The convoy was moving from the airport area towards Kothrud when the rider, identified as Shubham Vijay Vanit, allegedly overtook in a zig-zag and negligent manner, briefly obstructing movement. A medical examination confirmed intoxication.
He faces charges under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act (including for drunken driving) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving that endangered others. Police tracked him via CCTV after he fled the scene.
